avril quadros at opus : review

I have heard about this singer called Avril but knew nothing about her music. So when last week Carlton sent me his irresistible message about Avril's performing at Opus, I was among the first to check in.
My impressions:
1. Avril has a terrific stage presence. That halo of auburn hair in its ordered disorderliness had me reaching for my BP pills. Not since I sat in the front row of a Diana Krall performance in Paris has hair affected me so joyfully. Add to that the well-designed clothes and her body language - nothing short of professional. Too many Bangalore performers, including those that are idolised by the young cognoscenti, look like they stepped out of a mud bath six weeks ago. Weak and gauche when it comes to stage presence. What they have to say is too often banal and how they say it too teeny-bopperish.
2. But the music was simply too overindulgent. Original songs without character, lyrics (when they cd be heard above the unfortunate sound mix) that thought rather too well of themselves for reasons that I cd find little justification for. The few covers of international hits on offer were well received - but I didn't know what to make of them. This may be rooted in my own limited knowledge of what passes for Hits these days, but I have often enough enjoyed hit songs that I didn't know when they were delivered attractively, to know that these weren't.
3. Hindi songs??? I guess there is money in them thar Bollywood hills but I didn't respect Usha Uthup or Sharon Prabhakar when they jumped on that unfamiliar bandwagon, and that neither have made any inroads into the million-sellers of that genre tells me you are either what it's about or you're not. Good luck to Avril. And if you actually have to explain, in lurid detail, to an audience that is hysterically applauding every word you sing that in the next song the foetus will be crying out to Mama on the abortion table, well ... either they don't know Hindi or you don't expect to sing it comprehensibly, and what the hell is the point?
4. The biggest downer? ALL the songs were delivered at Loud, Louder, Loudest levels. In fact Scream, Screamier, Screamiest. At a time when every pop singer and her aunty is discovering classic standards and ballads and recording them, it wd have been a relief to discover that Avril knows the value of a beautiful ballad sung gently into the night. If she does, she kept it a closely-guarded secret that evening.
To sum it up, a singer with the potential to be very good, if only she'd tweak her songbook to include songs that wd showcase her talent beyond her lung-power.
Stanley Pinto

PS And wd someone tell the sound-engineers at Opus that the star is the singer, the rest are her accompanists, and the ideal balance between the sonic output of the two shd be 100-70, not 100-100 or, as is often the case, a terrifying 100-120. Hmmmph.

stan my man,

i beg to differ ( rather emphatically ) with point no. 2.
the rock covers that she did i would rate right up amonsgt the stars. 'sweet child of mine' 'coming back to life' were really 'simply the best'. and its not that that halo of auburn hair or her 'body' language that is clouding my judgement. she really was aweome. as for the hindi ... well thats upto her .. personally i wouldnt sell my soul ... but secretly i can admire her ... and i think two of originals have some serious potential... after 2 weeks i still found myself humming chalta hai bhai india hai ... eeeks!
cheers
carlton

I didnt stay for the entire show as i had a prior appointment but i quite agree with Mr. Pinto in his saying that the noise levels might have been a bit high. No reflection on Opus hoewever, as all the equipment was brought in for the show by the artist and the levels likewise were set by them.

Stanley,

At the outset, I read your blog with much interest. I love the no holds barred style of writing - it is quite refreshing to read your commentary in a world of increasing political correctness and mediocre standards. In fact, your blog reminds me of the writings of a cantankerous old Gent from another era whose work I admire – V S Naipaul!

However (and a writer of your calibre must know there's a however must follow an "at the outset"...), this specific commentary left me with a feeling of emptiness.

As you rightly pointed out you are unfamiliar with the subject of contemporary rock music; even more so Bollywood-style filmi music. Modern day rock is as much about theatrics as it is about music - louder the better! Today's Rock is not about lyrics - for that, tune into the sweet ballads of the Fifties and Sixties! Don’t get me wrong I much prefer them to what the current lot have to offer. Further, I believe, there should be a law that bars them from even contemplating singing any of the old classics. But, the classics being what they are, will endure even this mobs' worst doing!

All I am saying, cut these kids some slack – especially if you are unfamiliar with the evolution of their trade! Give these kids a chance. Focus on cutting to ribbons the work of those East Meets West walahs, whose saving grace was the unmentioned pianist! There you are on your firm ground and have my full agreement.

Keep writing and making me smile – it’s a whiff of fresh air...maybe not, but I do like the smell of cigar smoke!

Take care,

James

PS – About the music level, I tried telling Carlton but he couldn’t her me over the din of the guitar and drums!

Mr Pinto!

Pardon my silence!

I have just returned from a few weeks on the road with minimal access to the Net. You are right, I agree with you on most counts...all, would be stretching it a bit too far.

At times, your commentary reminded me of my school teachers who were more hell-bent on proving to us how stupid we were rather than providing us with a list of actionable tasks that would help us improve our lot and create a sense of self-belief. This is not to say they did not have a valid point or their criticism of our results was unfounded. They were often right. But, the fact is our (or I should say my) results were not a result of deficient mental faculties, poor genetic material or lack of application. It was very much the outcome of an attitude that no matter what you do or how hard you try it was never ever good enough. Score 96% in PCM and the cut-off to the course of your choice in Engineering college was 98%. So why bother trying? After all if the focus is going to be on the 2% I did not achieve rather than the 96% that I did - then forget it. Yet nobody could tell me what the three concrete things I needed to do to get to the elusive 98% level. Of course, other than the usual "try harder"!

Similarly, you are a 100% right in your observations. And, I love the "take no prisoners" delivery style. But it would be more effective if you would elaborate on how exactly these yougster get to the point you expect them to. I challenge you to come up with a set of actionable things for these performers - especially, the younger ones like Avril, to do to improve their lot without destroying their belief in themselves.

Now, here's what you can do - (1)provide a list of songs that you think best show case Avril's voice and talent; (2) identify some that would challenge her to explore the realm of possibility; and (3)list a few role models - singers, lyricists and/or performers that she could learn from (not imitate). This would be something that she can definitely work on and possibly see, hear and feel the difference herself.

You don't need to tone it down (as I may have implied in my earlier response) but be a bit more helpful to the young 'uns by following up your honest critique with something to act on and become better. This way they can actually learn from your counsel and experience.

Keep writing...

Regards,

James

Hey Stanley,

Was there for the show, totally agree with you on the 'overindulgent bit' And some really weird lyrics- the foetus/abortion numbers. One would have expected something more sensitive.

The covers were much better than the originals!

that was her first show man.....after composing and arranging the music we barely had time (and a good sound engineer, sanjay and mike were all booked out) to pull this show off.....but all your points/ criticism (constructive or otherwise) well taken.....!! This woman's got scope....or i wouldn't be wasting time writing music for her......stan pinto and the others who give us all this gyaan.....PLEASE TELL ME WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DID SOMETHING ON A NATIONAL LEVEL.......the demo's for the originals are already doing the rounds in 12 cities - to audiences who matter....THE FANS.....who rip our Cd's and put them out there free!!!!.....Incidently we played 2more live concerts for a private audience(read corporate) and i think they were well received.....WE TOOK YOUR ADVICE ABOUT THE MIX STAN!!!!!.....and the big test comes not here....but a feww weeks from now ...in Mumbai....when the people who listen to it are the one's who put their money where their mouths are. This girl is funding her own album , with no frigging sugar daddy, and she's got the kotte's to do a new sound...ROCK, AT THAT....i admire her, and will back her to the hilt as her sessions guitarist and music producer. Berae yellarigu dhoda namaskara!!

Missed your gig, Stanley...am consoled in that it was only your chimp standing in...now when do we get the real thing?

As for Avril, she's evolved over the years, believe she can sound and look different depending on the setting...first heard her three/four years ago at West End (the Taj,I mean), at what is now the Vietnamese restaurant - dressed as a plain Jane in salwars, singing her heart out softly - if she can be persuaded to repeat that, you'd find what you prescribe (minus the auburn orderly disorderly tresses, of course!). Opus, are you listening?

What Stanley, no comments on my missive?

Anonymous said...

Hi Stan,
First time I have seen the comments. I believe you are correct about mnay things including the fact that the proprietors have a responsibility to get the sound correct within their establishment. Working with a live singer, sorry to say this, the sound engineer has a lot to do with the resulting sound. The engineer can either bring out the quality or ruin it for all. I know of only 2 in Bangalore that make a live singer sound good. We now use only them. Avril is one of the few who does not lipsync.
I have heard her many many times, and Opus did not do justice to either the voice or the songs. We nave sung them many times to mixed audiences and they have been well received.
I would like to extend you an invite to the next show we do and then I will welcome the criticism when the whole team are all doing their job correctly.
John
